PROJECT CO-FUNDED BY

CLUBE DOS TIPOS
& TIPOGRAFIA
DAMASCENO

Clube dos Tipos is a typography related initiative that encourages original perspectives on the age-old art form of letterpress typography with a view to derive unconventional forms and charter new territories of printmaking.

LETTERPRESS TYPOGRAPHY

Print studio Tipografia Damasceno celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2019. It is a family-run entity that has remained active through maintaining a zoetic connection with younger generations, ideas, and projects. The studio attributes its longevity to the strength derived from such associations, which have helped overcome periods of uncertainty during the past five decades that have coincided with multiple shifts in the paradigms of printmaking.

Tipografia Damasceno, in this respect, has been a recurring arena for epiphanies over the years. ‘Clube dos Tipos’, an idea conceived by Joana Monteiro, a Coimbra-based graphic designer and typography enthusiast, is a poignant example. The club, officially residing within the premises of Damasceno, serves to connect individuals with an interest in typography towards collaboratively exploring new grounds of application.

As a part of its activities, Clube dos Tipos also interacts with local schools and associations on an ongoing basis to communicate Letterpress printing’s remarkable legacy to a younger and wider audience.

CREATIVE PRODUCTIONS

A printed series of Almalaguês work songs was developed in letterpress at Tipografia Damasceno,  with a view to formally inscribe them as cultural artifacts that had previously only existed in tacit knowledge. This workshop was also intended to encourage correspondence between the two case study contexts, who are geographically proximate, towards furthering future opportunities of cultural co-production.
